A group of councillors is planning a last-ditch effort to convince their colleagues to use some of the city's $232 million surplus to prevent "drastic" cuts to emergency shelter and homeless beds during final 2013 budget debates this week.

Experts say government cuts have created a 'crisis' for homeless queer youth

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) youth are overrepresented in the homeless youth population. Approximately 12 years ago, it was estimated that 25-40% of homeless youth identified as LGBTQ, but we do not have enough research in Canada to know how much that estimate has changed.

Toronto, which is often a magnet for LGBTQ youth from across Canada and the world, does have youth shelters. But now their future is in question as city council ponders closing some of them.

I recently interviewed I. Alex Abramovich for Rabble.ca about the lack of support for LGBT homeless youth in Toronto. I. Alex Abramovich is a Doctoral Candidate in the Adult Education and Community Development program at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education-University of Toronto.

Homelessness among queer youth is also a problem in Toronto and GLBT activists are furious with proposals from Coun. Giorgio Mammoliti who plans to do away with the city's shelter system and clear Toronto's sidewalks of the homeless.

"People do not have a strong understanding of the connection between homophobia and homelessness," says Alex (Ilona) Abramovich, a PhD candidate at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at University of Toronto.

On Homeless Hub: "President Obama's recent endorsement of marriage equality gives much hope to millions of people in the queer community, however, there is still much more work to be done, especially with regards to the extremely high number of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) youth who are bullied, abused, kicked out, and forced to leave home due to homophobia and transphobia."

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) youth are overrepresented in the homeless youth population. It has been estimated that approximately 25-40% of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ.
